Fluorite – A genuine gemstone with versatile effects
Fluorite Stone – What's Behind This Colorful Mineral?

The fluorite stone is one of the world's most colorful and fascinating minerals. Mineralogically speaking, it is calcium fluoride (CaF₂) – a halide with a cubic crystal structure. The stone scores a 4 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it relatively soft and therefore easy to identify. Its extraordinary property: it can glow under UV light – the phenomenon of fluorescence is named after it. Fluorite occurs in almost all colors: violet, green, blue, yellow, pink, and colorless – often even multicolored in a single piece. If you are interested in the diversity of this stone, you can find a curated selection in our shop under Buy Fluorite.
Mineralogical Classification and Origin of the Fluorite Stone
Fluorite is mined in many regions of the world. The most important deposits are located in:
- China – the world's largest producer, especially from the Fujian and Zhejiang provinces
- Mexico – known for large, clear crystal specimens
- Namibia – supplies intensely green and violet specimens
- Spain and Great Britain – historically significant European sites
- USA (Illinois) – formerly a world leader, now less active
The name "Fluorite" is derived from the Latin word fluere (to flow). The stone was first systematically described in the 16th century. Historically, it served as a flux in metal smelting – hence the name. Today, it is valued in industry, research, and as a gemstone and decorative stone alike. The Mindat database lists over 9,000 known localities worldwide – an impressive testament to its global distribution.
Crystal Structure and Optical Peculiarities
Fluorite crystallizes in the cubic system. Octahedral and cubic crystals are typical. Its cleavage is perfect in 4 directions – which makes it challenging to cut. Its luster is vitreous and clear. Rainbow fluorite pieces with multiple color zones in one piece are particularly sought after. These are formed by different trace elements such as yttrium or organic inclusions during growth. You can find more about this variant in our collection Rainbow Fluorite – The Stone of Clarity and Harmony.
Fluorite Stone in Crystal Healing – Traditional Attributions
In crystal healing and spiritual tradition, the fluorite stone is attributed with special significance. These are traditional experiences without scientific proof – we would like to emphasize this explicitly. Nevertheless, the traditions are diverse and interesting.
Traditionally, fluorite is attributed with the following:
- According to traditional beliefs, it is said to promote mental clarity and concentration
- In crystal healing, it is considered a stone of order and structure
- It is traditionally believed to organize chaotic thoughts
- According to spiritual tradition, it is said to possess protective properties against external influences
- Green fluorite is traditionally associated with the heart chakra
- Violet fluorite is traditionally believed to address the brow chakra

Fluorite and Zodiac Signs
In astrological gemology, fluorite is often assigned to the zodiac signs Capricorn and Aquarius. According to tradition, it is said to particularly benefit analytical minds. Buying Fluorite – Shapes, Qualities, and What Matters

In our showroom in Feldkirchen near Munich and in our online shop, we offer fluorite in numerous forms. From years of experience in the mineral trade, we know: The quality of the locality and the processing grade make all the difference. We recommend buyers always pay attention to information about origin and processing level.
Popular Fluorite Shapes at a Glance
Whether as a decorative collector's item or a spiritual companion – fluorite is versatile:
- Fluorite Sphere – ideal as a meditation object and decoration. More about this in our collection Buy Fluorite Sphere
- Fluorite Point – is considered, according to traditional beliefs, an energy concentrator. You can find our selection under Buy Fluorite Point
- Rough Fluorite Stone – natural, ideal for collectors and purists
- Fluorite Pendant and Jewelry – as a stylish everyday companion
- Fluorite Specimen – decorative and impressive on a shelf or desk
Especially the multicolored rainbow fluorite spheres with diameters between 5 and 12 centimeters are very popular in our shop. The color transitions from violet to green to blue make each piece truly unique.
How do I recognize real fluorite?
Real fluorite can be recognized by its low hardness of Mohs 4. A knife (hardness approx. 5.5) scratches it easily. Dyed glass imitations show no real color zones and no natural fluorescence. Reputable dealers like Crystal Paradise value transparency. All our pieces are genuine and natural – or clearly declared as treated. Further information on mineralogy and authenticity criteria can be found in the Mineralienatlas-Lexikon.
Care and Cleaning of Fluorite Stone
Fluorite is a delicate stone. This is due to its low hardness and perfect cleavage. Here are our recommendations from daily handling of the stone:
- Clean with lukewarm water – rinse briefly, dry immediately
- No aggressive cleaning agents – acids or ultrasonic baths can damage the stone
- Do not store in the sun – intense UV radiation can fade colors over time
- Store separately from harder stones – scratches can easily occur from contact with quartz or beryl
- Energetic cleansing according to traditional beliefs: place on a rock crystal cluster or cleanse with smoke
Fluorite should not be left in drinking water permanently. It is water-soluble with prolonged contact and contains fluoride ions. Other stones are better suited for gemstone water – more on this in our articles about Rock Crystal as a water stone.
Frequently Asked Questions

What is a fluorite stone and how does it form?
Fluorite is a natural mineral with the chemical composition calcium fluoride (CaF₂). It forms in hydrothermal veins – meaning through hot mineral-rich waters that flow through rock fissures and deposit minerals. Crystallization occurs at temperatures between approximately 100 and 300 degrees Celsius. The color is caused by trace elements or natural radiation during growth.
What colors does fluorite have and what do they mean?
Fluorite occurs in almost every color. Violet fluorite is traditionally associated with concentration and intuition in crystal healing. Green fluorite is traditionally considered a stone of the heart and balance. Blue fluorite is believed in spiritual tradition to promote communication. Yellow fluorite is associated with creativity. Colorless fluorite stands for clarity. These attributions are spiritual in nature and have no scientific proof.
Is fluorite suitable as a gemstone?
Fluorite is conditionally suitable as a gemstone. Due to its hardness of Mohs 4, it is more delicate than, for example, quartz (Mohs 7) or sapphire (Mohs 9). It is well suited for pendants, earrings, and bracelets that are not exposed to strong mechanical stress. For rings worn daily, we recommend harder stones. However, as a collecting and meditation stone, it is unreservedly recommendable.
Can I energetically charge or cleanse fluorite?
In crystal healing, it is traditionally recommended to briefly rinse fluorite under running water and then regenerate it on a rock crystal cluster. Moonlight is also believed in spiritual tradition to have a cleansing effect. Direct sunlight for several hours is not recommended – both energetically and practically, as colors can fade. These methods are spiritual traditions without scientific basis.
Where can I buy genuine fluorite stone?
You can find genuine, hand-picked fluorite at Crystal Paradise – both in our online shop and in our showroom in Feldkirchen near Munich. We offer rough stones, spheres, points, specimens, and jewelry of tested quality. All pieces are personally selected. In our shop, you can find the entire selection under Buy Fluorite.
