Quality Criteria: What to Look for When Buying
Not every stone offered as a "water stone" is actually suitable for permanent contact with drinking water. You should keep the following points in mind:
- Only stones with a hardness of ≥ 7 (Mohs scale) are generally considered safe for direct water contact
- No water-soluble or sulfide-rich minerals (e.g., malachite, raw pyrite)
- Regular cleaning of the stones under running water is recommended
- Look for untreated, natural quality – no dyed or coated stones
Dyed or Natural – Why This Determines Safety
Especially with colorful water stones, dye baths are more the rule than the exception in retail. Classic color pigments work with exactly the elements you don't want in drinking water – and from the outside, you can't tell either the pigment or its stability by looking at a stone.
