Care and cleaning of epidote quartz specimens

Cleaning

Epidote is sensitive to light. Direct sunlight can cause fading if exposed intensely and for long periods (more than 2–3 hours daily for weeks). It is best to clean the specimen with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid chemical cleaning agents. Brief rinsing with lukewarm water (below 30 °C) is unproblematic for stable pieces. Then let the specimen dry thoroughly.

Placement and Storage

Do not place the specimen in continuously damp rooms. Epidote can tarnish slightly with prolonged water contact. A dry environment at room temperature between 18 and 22 °C is ideal. Transport and Handling

Although epidote crystals are hard, they are sensitive to localized impacts due to perfect cleavage in one direction. Transport specimens wrapped in soft cloth or foam. Large pieces (from approx. 1 kg) should be placed on stable surfaces.

Genuine epidote shows a characteristic vitreous luster and a typical pistachio green color. Under a magnifying glass, the monoclinic, tabular-prismatic crystal forms are recognizable. Epidote can be scratched with a glass cutter (Mohs hardness approx. 5.5); conversely, it does not easily scratch glass. Colored imitations lack the mineralogically typical color zoning and characteristic luster. In case of doubt, a mineral expert or a gemological laboratory can help.
