To the ancient Greeks, clear quartz (krystallos = ice) was petrified water – frozen so deeply that it could never melt again. This idea carried over into its symbolic meaning: what is frozen stays pure, untouched, imperishable. Hildegard of Bingen

The Benedictine nun and polymath Hildegard of Bingen (1098–1179) devoted a section to clear quartz in her work Physica.
