How to recognize real amethyst – protecting yourself from amethyst fakes

An amethyst fake can be recognized by several reliable characteristics: unnaturally uniform color, complete absence of inclusions, very low price, and often a glassy, overly smooth appearance. Real amethyst is a violet quartz with a Mohs hardness of 7. It forms in volcanic rocks and exhibits natural color zoning as well as mineral inclusions. Knowing these characteristics allows you to confidently distinguish fakes, colored glass, and inferior substitutes from the original. What is real amethyst? Mineralogical basics
Amethyst belongs to the quartz family. Its chemical formula is SiO₂. The violet color is caused by iron ions and natural gamma radiation in the Earth's interior. This process takes millions of years.

The most significant deposits worldwide are located in Brazil, Uruguay, Zambia, Madagascar, and Russia. Uruguayan amethysts are considered to have a particularly rich violet and deep color. Zambian specimens often show a reddish-violet hue. These differences in origin are an initial authenticity feature – an amethyst fake has no natural origin story.

The most common amethyst fakes – what circulates on the market
Unfortunately, fakes and inferior substitutes are widespread in the crystal market. We see this repeatedly in our shop: customers bring in pieces they bought elsewhere that turn out to be glass or colored material. Here are the most common types of amethyst fakes:
Colored glass
Colored glass is the most common fake. It has a hardness of only 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale. Real amethyst, with a hardness of 7, scratches glass – not the other way around. Glass feels warmer, shows no inclusions, and has a too-perfect color.
Synthetic amethyst
Synthetic amethyst is grown in a laboratory. It has the same chemical composition as natural amethyst. Without lab tests, it is almost impossible to distinguish from the original. A hint: synthetic stones show no natural inclusions or growth zones under 10x magnification.
Dyed quartz or chalcedony
Clear quartz or chalcedony is treated with purple dye. The color often only sits on the surface. Upon closer inspection, uneven color distribution can be seen along cracks or pores.
Prasiolite – the so-called "green amethyst"
Prasiolite is often sold as "green amethyst." This is mineralogically incorrect. Real amethyst is violet. Prasiolite is formed by heating amethyst to temperatures above 500 °C. It is a distinct stone with an altered crystal structure.
Citrine from heated amethyst
Many stones sold as citrine are actually heated amethyst. By heating to 470–550 °C, amethyst changes color from violet to yellowish-orange. This is not real citrine – another case of misleading labeling in the trade.
How to recognize real amethyst – 7 reliable testing methods
You can use these tests at home or when purchasing. They do not require expensive equipment.
- Hardness test: Try to scratch glass with the amethyst. Real amethyst (hardness 7) easily scratches normal window glass (hardness approx. 5.5).
- Temperature test: Real quartz feels cold – colder than glass at room temperature. Glass warms up faster in the hand.
- Color under light: Real amethyst shows color zoning. The color is not uniform. Glass fakes often appear too homogeneous and too bright.
- Magnifier test: Under 10x magnification, natural inclusions, growth lines, or veil-like traces are visible. Too-perfect stones are suspicious.
- Weight: Real quartz with a density of 2.65 g/cm³ is noticeably heavier than glass (approx. 2.5 g/cm³) at the same volume.
- Bubble test: Glass often contains tiny air bubbles. These are visible in fakes under a magnifying glass. Real amethyst does not show air bubbles.
- UV light: Real amethyst shows little or no fluorescence under UV light. Some colored glasses fluoresce clearly visible.
Color zoning – the most important authenticity feature against amethyst fakes

The most reliable identifying feature of real amethysts is natural color zoning. In nature, quartz grows in layers. The iron ions are unevenly distributed. The result: light and darker violet tones alternate. This is particularly visible at the tip of amethyst crystals.
An amethyst fake made of colored glass has no such zoning. The color is identical from the inside out – a clear warning sign.

Special features of processed amethysts
Tumbled stones and polished forms
Tumbled stones are polished amethysts. The surface is smooth and shiny. This makes the hardness test more difficult. Here, pay special attention to the color zoning inside. With amethyst tumbled stones, it is often visible as light and dark streaks in transmitted light.
Amethyst spheres and points
Spheres and points are cut from raw material. Look for natural inclusions. Perfectly clear spheres without any streaks or cloudiness may indicate glass or synthetic material.
Agatized amethysts
A special natural combination is agatized amethysts from Uruguay. Here, agate encloses the amethyst. This combination is a clear sign of natural formation – no fake can imitate this grown structure.
How to recognize a reputable dealer
We recommend paying attention to the following points when purchasing:
- Transparent origin information: Reputable dealers state the country of origin and ideally the mining region.
- Authenticity guarantee: Dealers should guarantee that the stones are natural.
- No overly cheap prices: High-quality amethyst druzes from Uruguay cost upwards of 20–30 Euros for smaller pieces. Significantly lower prices are a warning sign.
- Return policy and advice: Reputable shops offer returns and personal advice.
- Physical presence: Dealers with a showroom or trade show presence are usually more trustworthy than anonymous online providers.
