Tiger's eye is a microcrystalline, golden brown to golden yellow striped variety of the mineral quartz. It has a clearly visible fibrous structure and has a greasy to silky sheen on its surface. Tiger's eye is used almost exclusively as a gemstone.
The fibrous inclusions in tiger's eye are typically made up of mineral fibers such as crocidolite, a form of asbestos. These fibers occur naturally and are embedded in the quartz. Over time, the crocidolite is replaced by quartz and other minerals, a process called pseudomorphism that creates the characteristic chatoyant effect.
Tiger's eye often exhibits golden to reddish-brown colors, although there are variations such as blue and green tiger's eye. The stone has a silky luster and a Mohs hardness of about 7, making it relatively durable for use in jewelry and other decorative purposes.
It is interesting to note that tiger's eye originates from another quartz, hawk's eye. When this quartz weathers, the pseudomorphism of crocidolite into quartz and the deposition of iron creates the golden brown shimmering tiger's eye.
