Before you charge your amethyst, you should clean it. This means: releasing accumulated energies, removing dust particles, and preparing the stone for a fresh start. There are several proven methods – each with its own peculiarities.

Cleaning with Running Water

Amethyst tolerates clear, cool water well. Hold the stone under running tap water for 1 to 3 minutes. Important: The water should not be warmer than 30 °C. Strong temperature fluctuations can create micro-cracks over time. Afterward, gently dry the stone with a soft cloth. This method is particularly suitable for polished tumbled stones or spheres.

Caution: Amethyst geodes or delicate points should not be watered for too long. Fine inclusions or accompanying minerals like calcite can react more sensitively.

Cleaning with Smudge Smoke

The so-called smudging or smoking is a traditional method. Light a smudge stick of white sage, Palo Santo, or frankincense. Hold the amethyst through the smoke for about 30 to 60 seconds. Ensure good ventilation in the room. This method is gentle and suitable for all forms of amethyst – including delicate geodes or hollow forms.

Cleaning with Moonlight

One of the gentlest methods: Place your amethyst on a windowsill or outdoors in the evening. Leave it overnight in the moonlight – ideally around the full moon. This method is particularly popular because it causes no physical stress to the stone and is also considered symbolically powerful.

Cleaning with Earth

You can bury your amethyst in the earth for 24 to 48 hours – either in the garden or in a flowerpot with natural soil. In many traditional beliefs, earth is considered a neutralizing force. Wrap the stone in a thin cloth beforehand to prevent particles from entering fine cracks.

Cleaning with Salt – With Caution

Dry sea salt is often recommended. But be careful: Salt water can attack the surface of amethyst and dull its shine. If you want to use salt, place the stone in dry salt for a maximum of 12 hours – not in salt water. Polished surfaces and geodes are particularly susceptible to damage with this method.

Morning sunlight is considered particularly gentle and energy-rich. Place your amethyst in direct sunlight for a maximum of 30 minutes. Important: Longer exposure to sunlight can fade the violet color of amethyst. This is due to the photosensitive nature of the iron color centers in the crystal lattice. However, a short "sunbath" will not cause any harm.

Charging on Clear Quartz or Selenite

A popular and gentle method: Place your amethyst on a clear quartz geode or a selenite plate. Both minerals are considered energy amplifiers and self-cleaners. This method is particularly suitable for everyday use – you can simply store your amethyst permanently on such a base.
