Lazurite is a mineral from the mineral class of tectosilicates with sulfate, sulfur, and chloride with the formula (Na,Ca)8[(S,Cl,SO4,OH)2|(Al6Si6O24)]. It is a feldspathoid and belongs to the sodalite group. Lazurite crystallizes in the isometric system, although well-formed crystals are rare. It is usually massive and forms the majority of the gemstone lapis lazuli.
The color of the mineral is typically a deep blue, often speckled with white and gold. It has a hardness of 5.5-6 on the Mohs scale, meaning it can be scratched by materials with higher hardness, such as quartz. Lazurite also has a vitreous to greasy luster and a specific gravity of 2.4-2.5.
Lazurite has a variety of applications, both practical and decorative. One of its most common applications is in the production of pigments for paints and dyes. The deep blue color of lazurite is highly sought after in these industries and is often used to create shades of blue that cannot be achieved with other pigments. Lazurite is also used as a decorative stone in jewelry and sculptures. It is often polished and cut into cabochons or other shapes to showcase its beautiful blue color.
