item description

Silicon carbide, also known as silicon carbide or carborundum, is a chemical compound of silicon and carbon with the chemical formula SiC1. Here are some important details:

  • Appearance: In its pure state, it is a colorless, hexagonal and rhombohedral, mostly leaf-shaped crystal plate.
  • Density: 3.21 g·cm.
  • Melting point: decomposition > 2300 °C.
  • Solubility: Practically insoluble in water.

Uses: It is used as a semiconductor and ceramic, often called carborundum. SiC occurs naturally in an extremely rare mineral called moissanite. Pure silicon carbides appear as colorless and transparent crystals.

Electronics: SiC offers a number of advantages over silicon, including 10x the breakdown electric field strength, 3x the band gap, and enables a wider range of p- and n-type control required for device construction.

Please note that almost all silicon carbides available on the market are synthetically produced, as naturally occurring moissanite is very rare and contaminated.
