The first chiseling work exposed a crevice opening of just 20 by 60 centimeters. Josef was the first to crawl in – and found a gradually opening, tube-shaped quartz crystal crevice, the end of which was not visible. The first loose crystals immediately proved to be light, clear smoky quartz of remarkably good quality. The two crystal hunters named the discovery site "Marmotta" – the Marmot's Crevice. Remaining skeletons and scratch marks on individual crystals confirmed: marmots had indeed lived here.

For weeks, Josef and Kaspar used their free time to carefully detach crystal cluster after crystal cluster. With the help of a generator for lighting and an old mattress to protect the delicate points, they carefully recovered the finds. The largest cluster weighed around 180 kg. After about eight meters, a compact calcite band closed off the crevice.

Giant Crystal Find in Marmot's Nest!

On a beautiful June day, crystal hunters Josef Senggen and Kaspar von Bergen meet at Grimsel Pass. One comes from upper Goms (Valais), the other from Haslital (Bernese Oberland). The two have known each other for a long time. Over a cup of coffee, they agree on a crystal hunting trip towards Oberaar.

A strenuous, fruitless hike is already behind them when, with binoculars, they discover a noticeably disturbed spot on a rocky outcrop. A brief discussion, and they are already on their way for a closer inspection. Arriving at the spot, they can hardly believe their eyes: they stand before an abandoned winter burrow of marmots. This is nothing unusual. But what makes their crystal hunter hearts beat faster are the quartz points and small crystal clusters that the marmots have scraped out of their burrow along with rubble and earth!

The two wonder if they might have a crevice in front of them. In short, they decide to investigate. Will the work be worth it? They see no usual signs of a crevice. The terrain consists of a rounded rock hump that merges into the turf. Right at the transition is the entrance to the marmot's burrow.

The two crystal hunters tackle the task with vigor. After clearing the turf and earth, they see that the rock here is cracked. The first chiseling work exposes a crevice opening of just 20 by 60 centimeters. Josi is the first to crawl in. He can hardly believe his eyes: a gradually opening, tube-shaped quartz crystal crevice, the end of which is not visible! The first loose crystals he brings to light prove to be light, clear smoky quartz of good quality. And the question immediately arises: how do we illuminate the crevice during the work? The two decide on a generator. This generator will be a good helper to them during many arduous hours.

Soon a name was found for the obviously large crevice, whose crystal recovery, as it later turned out, took a very long time. They spoke only of the "Marmotta", the Marmot's Crevice. That it was indeed a formerly inhabited marmot burrow was shown by the remaining skeletons and scratch marks on some crystals. From then on, weeks of free time were needed to detach all large and small smoky quartz specimens and plates.

Both placed great importance on damaging as few points as possible: an old mattress served well for this! The careful hard work paid off; crystal cluster after crystal cluster could be recovered. The individual clusters – the largest weighing about 180 kg! – were brought to light on a plank stretcher. Many a crystal hunter could learn from Josi and Kaspar's work!

After about eight meters, the crevice was blocked by a compact calcite band. To determine the possible further course, this band had to be chiseled out – no easy task in a space of about 50 centimeters high! After removing the closure, the crevice opened again and widened in a semicircle.

This crystal cave gradually rises towards the back. It is probably about 28 meters long. The crevice height, initially 30 cm, increases to 80 cm, the width to approx. 3 m. The crevice floor is rocky and only in some places covered with different colored chlorite sand. The light smoky quartz crystals, grown on Aare granite, all hung from the crevice ceiling, which is crisscrossed with cracks. In one part of the crystal cave, quartz was found studded with small anatase and brookite crystals. Small apatites could be discovered on the leached parent rock.

The most pleasing aspect of this find is certainly Josef Senggen's decision:

He makes his finds accessible to the public by building a private museum at his home "Kristall" in Obergesteln, where most of the recovered crystal specimens are displayed. The opening was celebrated on August 25, 1989. In the anteroom of the museum, visitors are greeted by his lucky charms, a group of marmots, before they can marvel at the mineralogical treasures.
