Prehnite is a fascinating gemstone that belongs to the mineral class of silicates and germanates. It has a Mohs hardness of 6.0 to 6.5, which makes it quite resistant. Its fracture, or tenacity, is uneven. Prehnite can form in various ways. It can form from other minerals or individually in fissures, geodes, and veins.

In its pure form, Prehnite is colorless and transparent. However, due to multiple light refraction, it can also be white or milky. Due to impurities, Prehnite can appear gray or yellowish to greenish. It crystallizes orthorhombically and melts easily when soldered. Prehnite is quite resistant to acid, but even slight heat exposure can damage it.

Prehnite is considered a strong protective stone and is among the most important healing stones. In stone lore, it is considered a stone said to have a consciousness-expanding effect and to sharpen self- and environmental perception. Thus, it promotes self-acceptance. Yellow Prehnite already has a strong effect, but green Prehnite is considerably stronger, as it additionally enhances comprehension.

Prehnite was named around 1783 after its discoverer, Hendrik von Prehn. Prehn brought several minerals from the Cape Province, known today as the Cape of Good Hope. He had it analyzed by Abraham Gottlob Werner, who recognized the material as a new mineral species. It was Werner who gave the found mineral the name Prehnite. Today, Prehnite can be found in many places worldwide. In Germany, it is mainly found in Bavaria.
