Pyrite, also known assulfur pyriteoriron pyrite, is a very commonly occurring mineral from the class ofsulfides and sulfosalts. Pyrite is also known as "fool's gold" or "iron sulfide".
This specimen is from Indonesia.
The specimen weighs 370g.
Chemically speaking, it is the cubic modification ofiron(II) disulfide (FeS₂)and thus consists of iron and sulfur in a molar ratio of 1:2. Pyrite isopaquein every form and predominantly developsidiomorphic crystalsin the form ofcubesorpentagonal dodecahedra. Octahedraanddisdodecahedraare also common, as are combinations of these forms. The crystal faces often show a characteristicstriationand, when fresh, a vividmetallic luster. With aMohs hardness of 6 to 6.5, pyrite isamong the harder minerals, which, similar to the reference mineral orthoclase, can just barely be scratched with a file.
Category: Sulfide mineral
Formula: FeS21
Crystal system: Cubic
Hardness on Mohs scale: 6–6.5
Density: 4.8–5 g/cm
Color: Pale brass yellow, reflective; darker and iridescent tinted
Luster: Metallic, shiny
Streak color: Greenish-black to brownish-black
Pyrite is the most common sulfide mineral. It is often mistaken for gold, hence the nickname "fool's gold." Nevertheless, pyrite is sometimes found in association with small amounts of gold.
Pyrite was formerly used as a source of sulfur, but today it is only a byproduct ore for sulfur and iron. Pyrite was polished by indigenous peoples in earlier times and used as a mirror.
Properties and meaning of raw pyrite:
- Clarity and focus: In stone lore, pyrite is traditionally associated with a clear, determined mind. It helps in setting goals and focusing on what is essential.
- Energetic cleansing: In stone lore, raw pyrite is traditionally regarded as an energetic cleanser, said to absorb negative energies from the surroundings and clear the aura.
Pyrite is often revered as a protective stone and can remind us that true treasures are often found in their raw state. If you're looking for a unique and powerful gemstone to accompany and energetically support you, raw pyrite could be just right for you. Let yourself be enchanted by its natural beauty and discover what stone lore attributes to it.
Meaning of pyrite in different cultures:
- Ancient Egypt: Pyrite was considered a symbol of the sun and was worked into jewelry and amulets.
- Greeks and Romans: They valued pyrite and used it for jewelry and religious purposes.
- Ancient Rome: Pyrite was worn as a protective amulet against sorcery and negative energy – a belief documented in numerous Roman sources.
- Medieval Europe: Pyrite was used as a talisman to protect against the evil eye.
- Victorian era: Pyrite was very popular in jewelry making, as it was used as a decorative element in various pieces.
- 16th and 17th century: Pyrite was used as an ignition material in early firearms.
- Modern times: Pyrite is used in the production of sulfuric acid, and due to its ability to produce sparks, it has found use in various industrial applications.
- Spiritual meaning: Pyrite is often called the stone of manifestation and is said to help turn our wishes and goals into reality. In stone lore, pyrite is traditionally associated with drive, self-confidence, and creative energy, which is why it is popular among artists and writers.
