Prehnite is a fascinating gemstone that belongs to the mineral class of silicates and germanates. It has a Mohs hardness of 6.0 to 6.5, which makes it quite durable. Its fracture, or tenacity, is uneven. Prehnite can form in a variety of ways. It can form from other minerals or singly in fissures, geodes and veins.

In its pure form, prehnite is colorless and transparent. Due to the multiple refraction of light, it can also be white or milky. Impurities can make prehnite appear gray or yellowish to greenish. It crystallizes orthorhombic and melts easily when soldered. Prehnite is fairly insensitive to acid, but even a small amount of heat can damage it.

Prehnite is considered a strong protective stone and is one of the most important healing stones. It promotes awareness and increases perception of oneself and the environment. It therefore promotes self-acceptance. The yellow prehnite already has a strong effect, but the green prehnite is much more powerful, as it also increases the ability to understand.

Prehnite was named after its finder, Hendrik von Prehn, around 1783. Prehn brought some minerals from the Cape Province, today known as the Cape of Good Hope. He had them analyzed by Abraham Gottlob Werner, who recognized the material as a new type of mineral. It was Werner who gave the mineral he found its name, prehnite. Today, prehnite can be found in many places around the world. In Germany, it is mainly found in Bavaria.
