- Gloss : Glassy to almost metallic luster; in aggregates also silky luster to matt.
- Mohs hardness : 2 to 3 – thus a soft mineral.
- Cleavage : Good after {100}.
- Fracture : Uneven and brittle.
- Crystal system : monoclinic.
- Morphology : Develops needle-like to blade-shaped crystals, often in radial to spherical, fine-fibered aggregates.
Place of origin and location
Tuperssuatsiaite originates from the Aris quarries near the town of the same name, about 25 km south of Windhoek, Namibia. This locality is known for its phonolite and trachybasalt veins, in which the mineral occurs in association with analcime, apophyllite, aragonite, bastnäsite, eudialyte, macatite, microcline, villiaumite, and titanite. The tuperssuatsiaite specimens found here are characterized by their almost sea urchin-like, reddish-brown to golden-yellow aggregates.
Tuperssuatsiaite was first discovered in Greenland and named after the type locality, Tuperssuatsiate, which means "fairly large tents" in the old orthography. Although it is a rare mineral, there are no specific cultural significances or traditions associated with tuperssuatsiaite. However, its rarity and unique appearance make it a sought-after specimen for collectors and mineral enthusiasts.
