Aventurine quartz, also known as aventurine or mica quartz, is a variety of the mineral quartz. It contains microcrystalline inclusions of fuchsite, mica or hematite, which produce a strong sparkle called aventurescence.
The color of aventurine quartz is very varied and can occur in brown, reddish, bluish or greenish shades. This is due to the presence of microscopic inclusions of other minerals in the aventurine. The green mica mineral fuchsite causes aventurine quartz to turn green and goethite or hematite contained in the mineral causes aventurine quartz to shimmer brownish, red, orange to gold.
Aventurine quartz is often used as a gemstone. It is interesting to note that the name aventurine translated from Italian means “the stone found by chance”. This is closely related to the time of the mineral’s discovery in the 17th century.
