Cavansiteis a rarely occurringmineralfrom themineral classof the „silicatesandgermanates“. It crystallizes in theorthorhombic crystal systemwith the chemical composition Ca[V4+O|Si4O10] · 4H2O, and is therefore acalcium-vanadium-sheet silicate.
Origin India, weight 94 g.
Cavansite is transparent and develops long, prismatic to needle-likecrystals, but also radialmineral aggregatesof blue to greenish-blue color with a glassylusteron the surfaces.
Cavansite also belongs to the class of „silicates and germanates“ and there to the division of „sheet silicates (phyllosilicates)“.
The compound Ca[V4+O|Si4O10] · 4H2O is dimorphic and occurs in nature, besides the orthorhombically crystallizing cavansite, also as pentagonite, which likewise crystallizes orthorhombically but in a different space group.
Cavansite forms primarilyhydrothermallyin cavities ofvolcanic rockssuch asbasaltandtuff. As a rare mineral formation, cavansite has so far only been proven at a few localities, with only 13 localities known to date (as of 2012).
