Agate Slices as Coasters – Nature Meets Table Decor

An agate slice is a thinly sawn slice of genuine agate, polished on both sides. What makes it so appealing as a coaster is exactly what makes it a collector's item: the banding grown over millions of years, which never looks the same on any two slices. Instead of an industrially punched cork coaster, your glass stands on a one-of-a-kind piece of nature. At Crystal Paradise you'll find agate slices in coaster size – natural, dyed, or with a gold rim running around the edge.
Our team from Feldkirchen near Munich selects each slice with a trained eye for polish, color intensity, and the finish of the rim – a standard we've upheld for years in our showroom and at national mineral fairs.
What sets our agate slices apart?
- Genuine agate: microcrystalline quartz from the chalcedony family – natural or gently dyed, the mineral structure remains unchanged
- One of a kind: Each slice has its own banding, color, and contour
- Origin: predominantly India, especially the Maharashtra region – a classic agate source
- Size: approximately 6 to 10 cm in diameter – suitable for glasses, cups, and mugs
- Surface: polished on both sides; many slices are translucent and glow when backlit
- Rim: depending on the piece, natural or refined with a gold or rose gold rim
Agate Slices as Conscious Home Decor

Agate slices are more versatile than a mere kitchen accessory. They work just as well as a tray for jewelry or small crystals as they do under a tea glass, and in a window they become a play of color. They pair well with the amethyst geode on the sideboard or the crystalpower® water stone carafe on the dining table.
In crystal lore, agate is traditionally considered a stone for stability and grounding. This makes it a popular gift – for example, combined with matching amethyst geodes on wooden stands as an atmospheric set.
If you'd like to dive deeper: In our blog article about amethyst and in the guide on the properties of rose quartz you can learn more about the best-known types of stones. Larger slices – up to over 30 cm in diameter, intended as wall pieces or collector's items – can be found under Agate Slices & Crystal Slices.
If you'd like to learn about mineralogy beforehand, you'll find a well-researched overview of agate on Wikipedia.
Frequently Asked Questions

Are agate slices suitable for everyday use as coasters?
For dry glasses and cups, yes – agate is hard and the polished surface is resistant. There are two things to keep in mind: the slices don't come with a felt backing from the factory, so on very delicate tabletops it's worth attaching a felt pad. And no slice likes standing water: with dyed pieces, prolonged moisture can affect the color, and with the gold or rose gold rim, it can affect the finish. Setting down a damp glass briefly is not a problem – a puddle of water for hours is. For cleaning, a soft, slightly dampened cloth is enough, without abrasive cleaners.
Which agate slice is especially popular as a gift?
The slices with a gold rim are the ones that sell most often across the counter – they look ready-framed and suit almost any decor. If you prefer more color, go for the dyed slices; if you prefer something more understated, go for the white salt agate slice. This pairs well with our selection of amethyst carvings or a gift set from the lucky charm collection.
