Tiger's eye is a microcrystalline variety of the mineral quartz with golden-brown to golden-yellow stripes. It has a clearly visible fibrous structure and shows a greasy to silk-like sheen on its surfaces. Tiger's eye is used almost exclusively as a gemstone.

The fibrous inclusions in tiger's eye typically consist of mineral fibers such as crocidolite, a form of asbestos. These fibers occur naturally and are embedded in the quartz. Over time, the crocidolite is replaced by quartz and other minerals. Through a process called pseudomorphism, the characteristic chatoyant effect is created.

Tiger's eye often displays golden to reddish-brown colors, although there are also variations such as blue and green tiger's eye. The stone has a silky sheen and a Mohs hardness of about 7, making it relatively durable for use in jewelry and other decorative purposes.

It is interesting to note that tiger's eye develops from another quartz, hawk's eye. When this weathers, the pseudomorphism of crocidolite to quartz, along with the incorporation of iron, creates the golden-brown shimmering tiger's eye.
