Sphalerite is a zinc sulfide mineral with the chemical formula ZnS and is considered one of the most brilliant minerals known. Its refractive index even surpasses that of diamond. Our latest find comes from the Banten province on the island of Java – a region that has previously received little attention in the international mineral trade. Origin: Indonesian Sphalerite – Banten on Java
The province of Banten is located in the westernmost part of the island of Java. It borders the Sunda Strait, which separates Java from Sumatra. This geologically active zone is rich in hydrothermal ore bodies. It is precisely there that the conditions under which sphalerite thrives are created.
Banten is primarily known for its historic 16th-century Sultanate Palace. As a mineral supplier, however, the region is still largely undiscovered. This makes our find all the more exciting. The sphalerite specimens from Banten show an intense honey to dark brown coloration with occasional reddish shimmer. These hues are caused by low iron content in the crystal lattice.
The pieces were extracted in small quantities by local miners. They come as natural specimens or as individual crystal groups on matrix – often accompanied by galena, pyrite, or quartz. This gives each piece a distinctive, mineralogically versatile character.

Care Instructions for Collectors
- Store dry: Sphalerite is sensitive to moisture. Prolonged dampness can cause the surface to tarnish or oxidize.
- Store individually: Since it is soft, it should not be stored with harder minerals. There is a risk of scratching even with contact with quartz (hardness 7).
- No ultrasonic cleaner: Its perfect cleavage makes sphalerite susceptible to mechanical vibrations. Ultrasonic cleaning is taboo.
- Gentle cleaning: A slightly damp, soft cloth at room temperature is sufficient for cleaning. Do not use aggressive cleaning agents.
- Protect from heat: Temperatures above 100 °C can impair the crystal structure and dull the surface.
- Consider light exposure: Very bright, iron-poor specimens can fade slightly with prolonged strong UV radiation.

Worn as a ring or bracelet, it would be too delicate for everyday wear and tear. As an exhibit on a desk or in a display case, however, it cuts an excellent figure.
Where else in the world is Sphalerite found?
Significant occurrences for collector quality include Picos de Europa in Spain, the Tri-State District in the USA (Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma), Potosí in Bolivia, and various locations in Mexico and China.
