Yooperlite from Michigan / USA (~10-15g) - "Glowing Rock" - UV reactive
Yooperlite , also known as Yooperlite, is a type of fluorescent sodalite found in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, USA. The name “Yooperlite” is associated with the location in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. “Yooper” is a colloquial name for people from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The first occurrences were only discovered in 2017 and are often referred to as “glowing rocks” due to their behavior under UV light
The stones are primarily composed of syenite rock, which is similar to granite, but they contain a high concentration of fluorescent sodalite. This mineral gives stones their characteristic glow when exposed to ultraviolet light.
Yooperlites were formed by volcanic activity about 1 billion years ago when the North American continent broke apart. They are only found in one specific location in Michigan and don't seem to appear anywhere else.
The color of Yooperlite is light gray to gray interspersed with darker, blue flecks due to the presence of fluorescent sodalite. Under UV light, Yooperlites glow a bright green color, making them perfect nightlights or accent lighting.
The Yooperlite weighs between 10 and 15g.
