Thomsonite is a rare and desirable member of the zeolite group that occurs in unique and interesting crystalline aggregates. There are two main types of thomsonite: thomsonite-Ca, which contains primarily calcium, and the extremely rare thomsonite-Sr, which contains primarily strontium.
The idealized compositions of these two types are as follows:
- Thomsonite-Ca: NaCa2(Al5Si5)O20·6H2O
- Thomsonite-Sr: NaSr2(Al5Si5)O20·6-7H2O
Thomsonite crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system and structurally belongs to the framework silicates within the zeolite group. It is known for its unique crystalline structures and its fascinating color palette, which ranges from white to gray and pink.
Thomsonite was first discovered near Old Kilpatrick in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland, and described in 1820 by Henry James Brooke, who named the mineral after the Scottish chemist Thomas Thomson.
It is also important to note that Thomsonite is a sought-after collector's item due to its aesthetic properties and rarity. It is often used in jewelry and gemstones.
Please note that the effects of gemstones and minerals have not been scientifically proven and should therefore not be seen as a substitute for medical treatment or therapy. These are traditions and beliefs that everyone can interpret and apply for themselves.
