Lepidolite is a member of the mica group of minerals with the chemical formula K(Li,Al)3(Al,Si,Rb)4O10(F,OH)2. It is the most abundant lithium-bearing mineral and a secondary source of this metal. It is also the main source of the alkali metal rubidium.

Lepidolite crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system and usually develops transparent, thick to thin tabular or strip-shaped crystals with a glass-like shine. The color varies mainly between pink, purple and red, but also gray and rarely yellow and colorless. Lithium is often thought to cause the pink hues that are so characteristic of this mineral. Instead, it is trace amounts of manganese that cause the pink, purple and red colors.

Lepidolite occurs almost exclusively in granite pegmatites, but also in tin veins. It has also been found in high-tempered quartz veins, greisen and granite.

Although lepidolite is a lithium-containing mica, faceted micas are virtually non-existent due to the perfection of the gap and variable hardness within the crystals. Reddish granular or solid lepidolite is usually plated for decorative purposes, such as ashtrays, paperweights, and bookends.
