Septaris is a term from geology. Derived from the Latin s(a)eptum (= septum), it describes calcareous concretions in calcareous clays, sometimes of considerable size. Inside, they are riddled with radial cracks (desiccation-shrinkage cracks). Minerals such as calcite are often deposited in these cracks (septa formation), but other filling minerals (e.g. siderite, pyrite, barite or quartz) can also be present.

Septarians are found worldwide and are usually found in carbonate-rich shales. A layer deposited in the Middle Oligocene, the Septarian Clay, was given this name because of the regular occurrence of septarians.
