Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass that is formed when lava from a volcano cools rapidly with minimal crystal growth. It is a unique rock.
Obsidian is produced from felsic lava, which is rich in lighter elements such as silicon, oxygen, aluminum, sodium and potassium. It is often found within the margins of rhyolitic lava flows known as obsidian flows. These flows have a high content of silicon, giving them a high viscosity. The high viscosity inhibits the diffusion of atoms through the lava, which inhibits the first step (nucleation) in the formation of mineral crystals. This, combined with rapid cooling, leads to the formation of a natural glass from the lava.
Obsidian is hard, brittle and amorphous; therefore, it breaks with sharp edges. In the past, it was used to make cutting and piercing tools and it was used experimentally as blades for surgical scalpels.
Obsidian is usually dark colored, similar to mafic rocks such as basalt. However, the composition of obsidian is extremely felsic. Obsidian is composed primarily of SiO2 (silicon dioxide), usually 70% or more by weight. Crystalline rocks with a similar composition include granite and rhyolite.
Obsidian is metastable at the Earth's surface (over time the glass devitrifies, becoming fine-grained mineral crystals), so obsidian older than the Miocene is rare. Particularly old obsidians include a Cretaceous welded tuff and a partially devitrified Ordovician pearlite.
