Amazonite, also known as Amazon stone, is a light to dark green variety of the mineral microcline. Its chemical formula corresponds to that of microcline (K [AlSi 3 O 8 ]), but also contains small amounts of lead, which is also responsible for the color. As part of the feldspar family, Amazonite is one of the most abundant minerals on earth.

Like microcline, Amazonite crystallizes in the triclinic crystal system and usually develops centimeter to decimeter-sized prismatic crystals as well as twins according to the albite and pericline law. Amazonite is exclusively processed into decorative stones and decorative objects.

Amazonite is said to come from the legendary land of Amazonia. Alexander von Humboldt reported this after his travels and called it Amazonenstein. In fact, it has never been found in the Amazon region. It was probably the green nephrite that the Spaniards brought with them from this area under the name “piedras de amazonita”.
